About us
Queensland Bauxite Limited holds in excess of 7,180 km2 of bauxite prospective terrain in Queensland, Australia.
The company’s focus centres on defining significant bauxite resources with a view to commencing direct shipping ore (DSO) bauxite mining and export operations in the near-term.
Queensland Bauxite Limited believes the East Australian Bauxite Province (stretching from Queensland to New South Wales) has been considerably under-explored and has the potential to become a world-class bauxite province.
Queensland Bauxite Limited is one of the few companies offering exposure to the bauxite industry, currently characterised by rapidly growing international demand. The company is targeting long-life DSO operations and believes it has positioned itself before the predicted rise in bauxite prices.
Queensland Bauxite Limited’s strategy entails:
- Defining high quality DSO bauxite resources close to port and infrastructure
- Shipping DSO bauxite ore to Asian alumina refineries
- Using initial DSO cash flow to fund further exploration and DSO production expansion
- Continuing bauxite exports and considering domestic sales to Australian alumina refineries
- Defining a sufficient economic bauxite resource to warrant the establishment of an alumina refinery
Following the completion of a comprehensive study, mapping and review process, the company has acquired projects that offer significant prospects for the attainment of high quality gibbsitic bauxite with a low reactive silica content close to key road, rail and port infrastructure.
Queensland Bauxite Limited’s projects include:
- The North Queensland Projects
- The South Queensland Projects
Bauxite
- Bauxite is refined into alumina which is smelted into aluminium
- Australia is the largest producer of Alumina in the world
- Improving market fundamentals – strong medium to long term outlook

Bauxite is a naturally occurring, heterogeneous material composed primarily of one or more aluminum hydroxide minerals, plus various mixtures of silica, iron oxide, titania, aluminosilicate, and other impurities in minor or trace amounts. The principal aluminum hydroxide minerals found in varying proportions with bauxites are gibbsite and the polymorphs boehmite and diaspore. Bauxites are typically classified according to their intended commercial application: abrasive, cement, chemical, metallurgical, refractory, etc.
Bauxite is usually strip mined (surface mining) because it is almost always found near the surface of the terrain, with little or no overburden. Approximately 95% of the world's bauxite production is processed first into alumina, and then into aluminium by electrolysis. Bauxite rocks are typically classified according to their intended commercial application: metallurgical, abrasive, cement, chemical, and refractory.
The bulk of world bauxite production (approximately 85%) is used as feed for the manufacture of alumina via a wet chemical caustic leach method commonly known as the Bayer process. Subsequently, the majority of the resulting alumina produced from this refining process is in turn employed as the feedstock for the production of aluminium metal by the electrolytic reduction of alumina in a molten bath of natural or synthetic cryolite (Na3AlF6), the Hall-Héroult process.
